However, every now and then a great chick movie comes along, and I can't help but stand up and cheer. Contrary to popular opinion, I do believe in romance, true love, and happy endings. (I just don't like having it spoon fed to me). So, for all of you out there looking for a good chick flick with a little more bite and substance, here is my official list of all-time favorite girly films. Oh, and just for fun, I decided to remove all the Jane Austen greats from the running (ie Pride & Prejudice [1995], Sense & Sensibility [1995], and Emma [1996]). Let's see if you agree or not...
11. Somewhere In Time10. An Ideal Husband
9. Bridget Jones's Diary I & II. It is very rare to find a sequel that is as funny, or funnier than the original. These two movies make me laugh hysterically every time I watch them. The fight sequences are the best.
8. Memoirs of a Geisha
7. Sliding Doors. A sleeper hit, that is one of my absolute favorites. Gwyneth Paltrow shows us what can happen when a split second decision changes your life forever. A fresh twist on the romantic genre.
6. Becoming Jane
5. Clueless. Based on Jane Austen's Emma, this contemporary take on a misguided matchmaker has it all: a sweet soundtrack, killer fashion sense, and of course a cute Alicia Silverstone at the height of her career.
4. Shakespeare In Love
3. Iron Jawed Angels (see my review on Cupcake Chowder).
2. In Her Shoes. One of the few films that is almost as good as the book, and seems to understand sister dynamics perfectly. It also features some seriously sexy shoes too!
1. Little Women. Hands-down one of the best chick flicks ever made. Once again, this is another story that spotlights sisters; their triumphs and sorrows, their loves and losses. Based on the classic book by Louisa May Alcott, this film stars Winona Ryder and Susan Sarandon as the indomitable March women. A sweet story from beginning to end. Did I mention it has Christian Bale too?

Movies that almost made the cut
6. Ever After. Who doesn't love a good Cinderella story?
5. Dirty Dancing
4. Romeo & Juliet (either version). I'm still amazed a woman didn't write this.
3. Anna and the King
2. Practical Magic
1. When Harry Met Sally. Fabulous screenplay by Nora Ephron.

Grrr... You cannot remove the Jane Austen greats!! This was tough, for many of your movies I have not seen. I myself have become extremely picky about the chick flicks I see and don't get to see very many any more. I completely agree with the Little Womena and for some reason I would add Sebrina, Where the boys are, and Breakfast at Tiffany's to my list. Happy movie viewing! -Suzanne
I knew there would be a few I would forget...but how did I miss Breakfast at Tiffany's? That would definitely be in the top 10!
This is where we clash my girlfriend! It's funny.. Everything you wrote about the chick flicks is how I feel about fantasy movies like Lord of the Rings,Princess Bride.. Willow.. Pretty much anything with elves and trolls I despise.
The only movies we may ever see together are twilight movies.. And BTW..why is twilight not up there??ha-ha!
I admit that I have only seen 3 of those movies on your list also..
I didn't like Becoming Jane at all.. I didn't know Jane never married, and I left sad instead of happy.. I like Happy endings!
I'm glad your one of my favorite girlfriends to go Antique shopping with since we'll probably never enjoy movies together..
It was fun to see your list! Thanks for sharing!
I have to agree with your list!
I loved in her shoes and lots of others. Little Women is such a classic!! I am a chick flick girl but it has to be good!
Ah, Meg, we have so much in common, but lists like these remind me that we are still very different people. On your top ten, I liked Clueless and Little Women a lot and enjoy most of your runner-ups. But if I'm gonna watch a chick flick and use up Nate's good will for it, I'd rather watch Victoria and Albert (one of my all time favorites) or Anne of Green Gables.
Btw, when I watched Somewhere in Time, I got to the end and was frustrated because I couldn't figure out what all the fuss was about (same for Out of Africa). Sorry for my pedestrian taste. ;^)
I, too, share your dislike for chick flicks. If I've said it once, I've said it a million times--where's the element of surprise? The twist? The scene at the end of the movie taht doesn't include someone running after a plane destined to leave mere seconds after arriving at the terminal? Hear hear for non-chick flicks! :)
Maybe it will be a bad thing if I come to a book club.. I may be hung for all of my chick-flick love..
To answer your question: I have actually seen 4.
Clueless- Loved and own it.
Somewhere in time- same as above
Becoming Jane- No thanks
and I forgot the 4th already.. I will have to come back..
Ok.. I lied. 2 more..
I saw Shakespeare in love which I loved.. Love Gwenyth..
And I ADORE little Women..
All of your runners up I liked..
I think I need to see some of the others you listed.
Somewhere In Time has the best soundtrack- so poignant.
Little Women is my favorite Winona Ryder movie, and *love* Christian Bale!
Others that make my list of chick flicks I can watch over and over (besides the Jane Austen greats)- Serendipity, Sabrina (with Julia Ormond), The Holiday, While You Were Sleeping, Tammy and the Bachelor, The Reluctant Debutante...
I'd add more, but my movies aren't unpacked yet!
Megan, I cant believe your not a chick flick kinda girl!?!
But, that's majorly okay because with your list I love/seen most of these.
In her Shoes was great! Loved the poem read at the end.
Little Women always makes me warm and happy inside. I had such the crush on Christian Bale and that ne married Amy.
Somewhere in Time. Oh. Classic. Classy. So bitter sweet. Love it!
Memoirs of a Geisha. Good but would probably never watch it again.
Becoming Jane. Same as said movie above.
***Now, i too would add Where the Boys are. Victoria & Albert LOVED.
Dirty Dancing LOVED
Well, better not get me started because it would just be a too long list with all of Janes classics and alot more others.
Great post!
ooooo good choices! I have to agree!
Okay, movies are unpacked... let's not forget Chocolat, Dan In Real Life, Benny and Joon, Anne of Green Gables, and One Fine Day. You know what bugs me more than a lame chick flick? Those annoying over-the-top comedies. Seriously the only movies done by Jim Carrey or Will Ferrell that I enjoy are Stranger Than Fiction and The Truman Show. (rant over).
Of course I've seen all of these (including runner-ups) except becoming Jane (want to, love Hathaway). But I would have to agree with Heidi that Chocolate would be in my top 5. Girl, where is Scarlet Pimpernel and Much Ado About Nothing?!
Yes, I can't believe I forgot Anne of Green Gables as well as Chocolat. I might even have to add little-known favorite Blue Crush to the mix too (for the tough chicks on surfboard aspect). Thanks for all your comments and feedback ladies! I love to dish about movies.
