Monterey, California

One of my favorite things about my recent trip to the Bay Area was going to Monterey for a day. The drive down the Pacific Coast Highway was spectacularly beautiful, and it was so wonderful to see the beach again! We passed through lots of small artist towns, fields of artichokes, and thick, foggy stretches of road. My mom has always wanted to go to the famous Monterey Bay Aquarium, so that was our first destination.

The aquarium boasts several incredible exhibits, the newest being "The Secret Lives of Seahorses". There are lots of replica tide pools where you can actually touch the various starfish, sea urchins, anemones and sting rays. There were penguins and sea otters, sharks and jellyfish (the jellyfish were my personal favorite). We also liked the exhibit where you can stand inside a wave as it crashes on the beach! The aquarium is located right on the water in the popular Cannery Row (made famous by American author John Steinbeck). There were lots of picturesque shops and winding streets with pedestrians walking their dogs. Monterey is now one of my all-time favorite travel destinations! I hope you enjoy the pictures below...From left to right:

1. Mom gets up close and personal with J. Steinbeck.
2. Sea life quilt at the aquarium. The picture doesn't do it justice!
3. The best chocolate milkshake I have ever had, courtesy of Ghiradelli's.
4. Pacific Coast Highway.
5. John Steinbeck wax museum billboard.
6. The famous Monterey Canning Company (now converted into shops).
7. We had the beach to ourselves.
8. A view from the aquarium window.
9. Argh! Saucy pirate wenches.
10. Feeding time for the sea otters. They are so cute!
11. Yes, that is a seahorse! Doesn't it look like green kelp?
12. Beautiful Moon Jellyfish.
13. Some great bodyboarding. *sigh* If only I had a wetsuit!

I love aquariums too. I used to go to the one in Seatle when my sister lived up in Washington.

I bet that milk shake was good. I love Ghirradelli's chocolate.

What a beautiful beach. I am glad you had a great time.
